ATTENTION ALL LNB STUDENTS AND ANYONE COMING TO LNB TRIALS OR EVENTS!!
It seems Kennel cough is making the rounds again this year. There have been cases on Vancouver Island as well as the Lower Mainland. Even if your dog has been vaccinated they can get this. The vaccine is like our Flu vaccines not all strains are covered. So be diligent with your dogs. Personally I would avoid allowing my dogs to interact with dogs you don’t know. Stay away from Dog Parks.
Please please please. If your dog shows signs or symptoms of Kennel Cough Do not come to classes or the arena. If any of the dogs in your household show these signs do not bring any of them to the trial. Please be considerate of your fellow classmates and their dogs. Do not share your dogs’ water bowl or food bowl with other dogs.
If you are unfamiliar with what kennel cough is about, now would be a good time to make sure you understand that the symptoms might not display as a COUGH... It maybe that your dog just seems to be "choking" or "clearing his throat" a wee bit - as if his collar was bugging his throat. This might only happen once a day doesn't have to be frequent. You might see your dog "reverse sneeze", regular sneeze, or have a bit of a runny nose. And then, of course, it might be a strong HACK with piles of spit all over your house!
Most of the time, kennel cough is just an annoyance, from minor to HUGE, but it is contagious, and you never know if the dog you are coming in contact with might be a target for pneumonia. So it is a thoughtful thing to do for your friends and fellow pet owners - if you think your dog has come into contact with kennel cough or is displaying even minor symptoms, you should make the choice to stay away.
You can go to your veterinarian for vaccine or you can get nosode available at Cloverdale pharmacy, that acts similar to a vaccine (even dogs vaccinated against kennel cough are not fully protected - it is like the human flu - they have to guess at what strains are floating around), and there are a few remedies that really help your dog if their cough is bothersome.
